Capstar (nitenpyram) is a fast-acting, oral tablet that kills adult fleas on dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens. It begins working within 30 minutes to provide quick relief from active infestations. Capstar is highly effective but only lasts for 24 hours, so it is meant for immediate knock-down rather than long-term prevention. How It Works Fast Action: Nitenpyram disrupts the flea's nervous system, causing adult fleas to die rapidly. You can literally see fleas start to fall off within 30 to 60 minutes. Short Duration: The medication is active in your pet's system for only 24 hours and leaves the body quickly. Targeted: It only kills adult fleas; it does not affect eggs or larvae. Ideal Uses Spot Treatments: Excellent for when you notice live fleas on your pet and want to eliminate them immediately. Pre-Grooming/Boarding: Useful before taking your pet to a groomer, boarding facility, or returning from an infested environment. Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD): Helps soothe painful skin conditions by drastically reducing daily flea bites. Maggot Treatment: It is also used to kill maggots (fly larvae) present on dogs with open wounds. Usage Guidelines Safety: Safe for pregnant or nursing animals, as well as puppies and kittens that are at least 4 weeks old and weigh 2 lbs (1 kg) or more. Administration: Give one tablet orally or hide it in food on any day you see fleas. Dosage: Tablets come in specific dosages based on the pet's weight (usually 11.4 mg for small dogs/cats, and 57 mg for larger dogs). Long-Term Plan: Because it only lasts a day, Capstar is not a replacement for monthly flea and tick preventatives.
